Vabamu Museums
Vabamu has two museums: Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom and the KGB Prison Cells.
Vabamu
Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom is located in the center of Tallinn, right by Toompea. The museum’s permanent exhibition Freedom Without Borders introduces the history of Estonia during and after the Soviet and Nazi occupations, arriving at the era of restoration of independence. The focus on restoring and preserving freedom is central to Vabamu.
Visitors are guided through the exhibition by an e-guide in English, Russian, German, Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, French and Spanish. The e-guide helps visitors connect with the personal stories of those who experienced the historical events covered throughout the exhibition. Vabamu also hosts temporary exhibitions each year which open up different interpretations of freedom.
KGB Prison Cells
The KGB prison cells are located in the old town of Tallinn, at the address Pagari 1. For almost half a century, this building was the headquarters of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the USSR, or NKVD, later known as the KGB, and the basements were used as prison cells. This building was the place where criminals tried to break the spiritual backbone of Estonians.
The exhibition of the KGB prison cells History of the KGB House presents the crimes committed in this building.
The permanent exhibition is in Estonian, English, Russian and Finnish.
