Waves of Creativity is an international residency programme for Ukrainian photographers and photo and video artists whose lives and creative work have been affected by the Russian-Ukrainian war, co-funded by Creative Europe. The programme brought together 11 artists who worked during their residencies in Estonia, Finland and Germany, developing personal projects shaped by different places, encounters and experiences.
The Vabamu pop-up exhibition, from October 15 to 20, presents a selection of their works, in which the war may not always be depicted directly, but can be reflected in the mood, themes, setting or the artist’s perspective. The exhibition invites visitors to consider how creative work continues in uncertain circumstances and how art can help keep experiences visible that must not be forgotten. The pop-up exhibition is part of the Waves of Creativity exhibition programme in Tallinn.
The exhibition, presented across three locations, features works by 11 Ukrainian photographic artists created during this summer’s residencies in Estonia, Finland and Germany. The participating artists are Mykyta Bezus, Oxana Chorna, Iryna Klachek, Olia Koval, Herman Krieger, Ievgeniia Kupchan, Valentyn Kuzan, Oleh Pereverziev, Alina Prisich, Olesia Saienko and Elena Subach. The exhibition includes photography, video art and installations. The curators of the exhibition are Temuri Hvingija and Andrii Mur.
The residency project is a collaboration between Haihatus Art Center and Residency in Joutsa, Finland, Kunstverein Wagenhalle in Stuttgart, Germany, OKAPI Gallery, and Odesa Photo Days from Ukraine. The project is co-funded by Creative Europe.
