76th Commemoration Day of the March Deportation Victims – Remembering and Understanding
On March 25, we mark 76 years since the March Deportation of 1949, when the Soviet regime forcibly removed over 20,000 Estonians from their homes. Together with the June Deportation of 1941, this tragic history affected tens of thousands of families, leaving a lasting mark on the Estonian people.
Vabamu is open on this day to offer everyone the opportunity to learn about these events and their impact through the stories of those who were deported and the meaning of freedom.
In addition to visiting Vabamu, several commemorative events will take place in Tallinn. More information can be found HERE.
At 16:00, a memorial ceremony for the March Deportation victims will be held at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Maarjamäe.
In the evening, at 19:00, a concert dedicated to the memory of the deportation victims, Along the Milky Way, will take place at St. John’s Church in Tallinn. The Estonian Sinfonietta Soloists will perform works by Veljo Tormis, Ester Mägi, Gia Kancheli, Tõnu Kõrvits, Robert Jürjendal, and Pärt Uusberg. Admission to the concert is free.
