Introduction
The Old Town building at Pagari 1 housed a notorious pre-trial detention centre. During the tour, we will investigate the controversial history of the building and reflect upon the transformative events in Estonia’s recent history. We will talk about the people who had to stay in the prison cells of Pagari 1, live in uncertainty and hopelessness, and suffer through tortures. Who were the people who fell with a shot to the back of the head? Who were the ones who pushed through the suffering and came out alive? Dark stories help tour participants better understand the past and the future, and to contemplate what it means to be human.
From May to September, visits to the KGB Cellars will begin at the entrance outside with a guide providing a brief explanation of the history of the house. Afterward, visitors may tour the cellars on their own and ask any follow up questions.
