This year on August, 20 Estonia will mark 33 years since the restoration of its independence. And to celebrate – visitors of all ages are welcome to Vabamu to learn or remind themselves of how Estonia regained and maintained its freedom. Exciting activities await everyone!
There will be tours and workshops. Tours are in Estonian, from 11:oo – 12:00 “On the Paths of Freedom and Restoration”/”Vabaduse ja taastamise radadel” and from 12:00 – 13:00 bicycle tour on the paths of restoring the independence.
Workshops:
11:00 – 15:00 Make yourself a badge
Making Estonia-themed badges on August 20 has become a tradition. You can find inspiration from the badges in our collections and create your own proud badge of freedom.
11:00 – 15:00 Design yourself a protest T-shirt
During the Singing Revolution, both the Phosphorite Campaign and the Popular Front had their own self-made T-shirts. Now, let’s make our own impressive T-shirt. Bring along an old or new T-shirt to draw or write messages and images that resonate with you. A light-colored fabric bag can also be used to display a protest message instead of a T-shirt.
The Vabamu café will be open all day, offering both savory and sweet snacks.
On this festive day, special prices apply for admission to the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Vabamu: 7€ for regular tickets, 5€ for discounted tickets (students and seniors), 13€ for family tickets, and free entry with a museum card.
August 23 is the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communism and Nazism. This day marks the anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed by two great powers in 1939. This year on August 23, we will also commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Way. We invite interested parties to join us for guided tours in Estonian and English on that day.
