On the morning of February 24, we will open Vabamu in the early hours, so that you can come directly after the National Flag Hoisting Ceremony to our museum to get to know and feel Estonian people`s stories. This year, in addition to our permanent exhibition “Freedom Without Borders”, it is possible to visit the temporary exhibition “Escape the Kitchen! 150 years of Estonian Women’s Movements” and participate in excursions and workshops.

Workshops

10.00–15.00 Vabamu workshop

Come and make a card, key ring or bookmark from birch bark. During and after the war, there was always a shortage of paper, which led to the use of alternatives. Estonians and other Baltic nations deported to Siberia used bark peeled from birch trees to write postcards and letters, as well as make albums, calendars and notebooks. Since large chunks of bark tend to roll up, the letters and cards were very small. Scarce, but valuable words were written with pen or ink.

10.00–15.00 Tõnismäe State High School workshop

Students invite guests to knit wristbands. You can learn different bracelet techniques, how to combine colours and create unique bracelets for yourself or your loved ones. Additionally to knitting, it is also a great time to chat, share ideas and spend time together. And why not discuss the future of Estonian education!

10.00–15.00 Estonian “Kodutütred” Girl Scouts` workshop

Girls will share with you their hiking experience and knowledge. You can practise making a stretcher from available materials, as well as different hiking knots. Youngsters can colour thematic pictures and solve puzzles and crosswords. It is also a good opportunity to learn more about the activities of Girl Scouts.

13.30–14.00 Performance of Tallinn Trumpet Ensemble

The cafe, the corner for board games and the wall of birthday wishes for the Republic of Estonia are open all day long!
