How to Engage Citizens Beyond Elections: Good Examples Around the Globe

We invite you to Open Government evening ‘How to Engage Citizens Beyond Elections: Good Examples Around the Globe’ on 2nd of December at 5 p.m.

Presentation by Sanjay Pradhan, CEO of the Open Government Partnership.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion led by Riina Raudne (founder of the Health Estonia Foundation) and audience participation.

The presentation and discussion are in English.

About Sanjay Pradhan's presentation:

The promise of democracy has often been defined by the ballot box. But that promise has not always translated into reality in people’s daily lives and the ballot box alone has not been sufficient..

Sanjay will talk about an emerging movement - the Open Government Partnership (OGP) - that is seeking to reinvigorate democracy beyond the ballot. OGP was launched in 2011 by eight Heads of States, including US President Obama. In just eight years, 79 countries and a growing number of local governments – representing more than two billion people – along with thousands of civil society organizations have joined OGP.

Sanjay will take us through a tour around OGP countries - from Afghanistan to South Korea, from the United Kingdom to Ukraine - to share stories of courageous and committed reformers and activists who are empowering citizens to shape and oversee government, so it serves them rather than itself. Sanjay will discuss our collective imperative to forge a positive global force to reinvigorate democracy and a countervailing force against the rise of authoritarianism.

The event is organised by the Estonian civic society's roundtable of the Open Government Partnership, in collaboration with the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom and the Strategy Unit of the Estonian Government Office.
