Once a year, on a Saturday evening in May, museums and other memory institutions open their doors later than usual to celebrate the pan-European Museum Night<\/a>. This year’s Museum Night is titled “There Are Voices in the Night” and invites everyone interested to join us in enjoying a special evening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Vabamu, visitors can explore not only our permanent exhibition \u201cFreedom Without Borders<\/a>\u201d, but also the NEW temporary exhibition \u201cEstonia Worldwide.<\/a>\u201d In addition, you can experience the exhibition audio journey \u201cFrom \u201csuch people\u201d to LGBT activism. Stories from sexual and gender minorities in the 20th century Estonia<\/a>\u201c.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are voices in the night, because Estonia is a democratic country where citizens have the right to vote. Use your voice and vote for your favourite thematic room in Vabamu\u2019s permanent exhibition. In line with this year\u2019s Museum Night theme, we are bringing historical radios from our collections on display \u2013 devices that once brought the wider world closer to people living behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet Union.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can also take part in an engaging quiz, where\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0need to guess which well-known person\u2019s voice you hear. We will present famous quotes performed by both Estonian and international figures. As prizes, we will raffle guided tours of the new exhibition \u201cEstonia Worldwide\u201d as well as tours of the\u00a0KGB\u00a0Prison Cells.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For those who find the night a bit too noisy, there is a chance to unwind in our music corner, where you can explore a cassette player and listen to a variety of tapes\u00a0\u2013\u00a0from jazz to nostalgic Estonian hits. Be sure to let us know which cassette was your\u00a0favourite.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At 20:00, a dance performance will take place.\u00a0German-Turkish\u00a0performance artist\u00a0Nezaket\u00a0Ekici will present \u201cHere and Now\u201d (working title), a performance-installation from 2026.\u00a0Nezaket\u00a0studied under Marina Abramovi\u0107 and will be in Estonia for a residency in May, making this Museum Night a special opportunity to experience her work at Vabamu.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the KGB Prison Cells, visitors can explore the permanent exhibition \u201cLocked Up Stories: The KGB in Estonia<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n
