Introduction
During the excursion you will learn about the 150-year history of Estonian women’s movements. Using the background knowledge from Estonian history textbooks, we tell stories that enrich our existing beliefs or point to interesting contradictions. What have women had to do to fight for the rights they have today? Let’s find out who these powerful women are who have helped to build our democracy, but whose names have been ungratefully left out of the history books. Who has contributed to the importance of the role of women through cinema, journalism, politics, education or arts? We will discuss what role women’s movements played during the Republic of Estonia, what changes the Soviet occupation brought to the movements, and what point we have reached today in valuing women’s rights and opportunities.
