Everyday Life in Soviet Estonia

Introduction

During this workshop, we’ll go back to Soviet times, back to the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, and to a replica kitchen of Tallinn’s suburban area. We are going to discuss some everyday questions about life – like what kind of wallpaper or cabinet to buy for the new home, or where to get new boots for the children, or what TV channel has the most interesting programs, or what should be changed in politics, and even how to celebrate Estonia's Independence Day on February 24th, since that was officially not allowed. Comparing contemporary and Soviet day-to-day life, we’ll reflect on the inequality that existed there during that time, and its causes, in the Soviet society.
