Siberian Crafts

Handicraft was an integral part of the life of Estonian people living in Siberia or in prison camps. Back home, handicraft, crocheting, and woodwork was done for personal pleasure, but abroad, these activities carried a far greater emotional significance. Tinkering was necessary both in practical terms and to maintain sanity in difficult situations. In the museum program, we will investigate the creations of prison camp inmates and deportees. Listening to stories from the past, participants will get their hands busy and decorate a practical personal item.
